From point of diagnosis and throughout treatment, the intention is to offer practical help that comes from the perspective of experience - of being there with many people diagnosed with brain cancer.

The role hopes to achieve an experience wherein people and their families feel that someone is consistent, empathetic, experienced and useful to them in their encounter with brain cancer.

What does this look like?

  • Navigation and understanding of the clinical specialities- surgical, radiology, oncology, through to general medicine, nursing, physio, occupational therapy, speech therapy, dietetics, psychology and social work

  • Wills and advanced care planning

  • Addressing your financial situation and giving pointers to find help.

  • Linking in with government supports- The NAS team: NDIS/Aged Care.

  • Linking in with Peace of Mind activities like weekends or day events- Creating community.

  • Informal and formal counselling.

  • Willingness to be there in the tough moments and facilitate, at times, difficult conversations and more…..

The service is based in Geelong and currently servicing Greater Geelong, the Bellarine and families in South West Victoria. Referral to our Brain Cancer Support Worker can come from anyone and is available free of charge, whether you are in the private or public health system.
