Maree & Aislinn's Story

My life completely changed when I found out my Mum (Maree) had Stage 4 Glioblastoma (terminal brain cancer).

After diagnosis, she had emergency surgery and the tumour started impacting her left side – she couldn’t use her left arm and her left leg was very weak. I moved in with her and became her full-time carer.

Everything was scary and on top of dealing with the grief of losing my Mum, I had to organise her care and navigate her treatment.

Fiona at Peace of Mind was an angel sent from heaven. As part of the National Advocacy Service, she guided us in figuring out what supports were available and did all the background work in applying for those services. She explained everything clearly and I knew she was always available for any questions or concerns I might have. This was all free of charge, and yet her support was like a life raft during the hardest time of my life.

Mum is now supported at home by a wonderful team of nurses and support workers, and she has access to other supports as required. She is about to start hydrotherapy next week to build up strength so she can hold her new little grandson.

I am so grateful to Fiona and Peace of Mind Foundation for being there for me and my Mum, for offering hope at a time when we felt like we were sinking. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts
