Reece’s Pieces A Success For Foodies And Brain Cancer

Talented chef Reece returned from London to spend time with his much-loved Mum, Liz, after she was diagnosed with brain cancer. The journey ahead for Reece and his family was challenging and confronting after this devastating news.

“After the initial diagnosis, I had come back to visit for a few weeks, and the news was incredibly devastating to our whole family as it led to so much uncertainty. This life-changing news struck, but Mum led us through with positivity, love and humour throughout her whole journey,” he said.

After returning home more permanently in May 2023 to spend time with Liz, Reece initiated a fundraising event supporting Peace of Mind Foundation, drawing on his professional expertise and connections to hospitality. With the support of friends at Canberra-based restaurant Pilot, ‘Reece’s Pieces’ was designed to attract supporters and guests to attend a two-day event featuring a set tasting menu.

Liz sadly passed away in July, and the recent event was a wonderful tribute to his Mum, bringing people together to raise a glass to celebrate together and leave a donation for Peace of Mind Foundation.

“This charity has a close connection with our family’s situation – Peace of Mind has been providing incredible support throughout, so it only seems right to focus on trying to give back something in our own way,” according to Reece.

The event was a huge success, attracting 80 guests over two days and raising over $12,000 through the event and via Reece’s online page on the Peace of Mind Foundation website.

Reece said he was incredibly grateful for the support he received from many in the hospitality sector in Canberra for getting behind the event.

“Everyone donated in their own way, which was incredible. Dash, one of the owners of Pilot who helped organise the event, contacted her wine suppliers, and many people donated wine, which was great, too!”

“We had a few people come in that had been in similar situations and had their own story – and it was great to hear them.”

“To others sharing their stories and planning their fundraisers, I salute you. It’s an incredibly difficult and emotional thing, but I realised with everyone’s support, we’re all in this together. Everyone has their own story and experience, and it’s such a strong and brave thing if you choose to.”

In a menu that featured the freshest locally sourced ingredients and fine wines, one very special dish stood out, crafted especially in memory of Liz. And who could resist a Cornflake ice cream sandwich – a dessert dedicated to his Mum’s love of Cornflakes.

Reece would like to thank the many supporters who attended the event and donated. Thanks to Pilot owners Dash Rumble, Ross McQuinn and Malcolm Hanslow (chef), and the many suppliers and helpers at the event.

“My two biggest supporters were, of course, my Dad Bruce and my sister Seanne. It wouldn’t have been the same without their incredible love and support. The event was inspired by both of them in dedication to Seanne and I’s beautiful Mum and Dad’s incredible partner, Liz.”
