Ryker Reaches For The Stars To Challenge Brain Cancer

Peace of Mind Foundation Ambassador Ryker shares his brain cancer journey

When Ryker was two years old, his mum and dad noticed a troubling decline in his development. Many medical appointments later, the confronting news of Ryker's diagnosis was revealed, he had brain cancer.

What followed was a harrowing time for all with surgery and treatment, with mum Kristie giving up her paid employment to care for Ryker. Today Ryker is making incredible progress but still needs a team of supports around him after experiencing a multitude of challenges post-surgery.  Now a busy and energetic four year old, social butterfly Ryker loves to make people laugh, make up random songs and is passionate about the solar system.

Throughout it all, brain cancer charity Peace of Mind Foundation have walked alongside Ryker and his family to offer practical support, compassion and community.

Kristie is now helping to transition Ryker to pre-school and when asked what her hopes for his future, the response is simple and moving.

'I'd just love to see him grow up and have a healthy and happy life.'

Ryker is Peace of Mind’s Ambassador for Challenge Brain Cancer in 2024, an annual event to raise funds and awareness of brain cancer, a disease that kills more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer yet receives one of the lowest levels of funding and support.

Founder and CEO of Peace of Mind Foundation Rebecca Mallett said helping patients like Ryker is at heart of what they do and they’re hoping this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever.

‘We’re Australia’s largest brain cancer support charity, supporting 800 families every year impacted by brain cancer that reach out to Peace of Mind for assistance,’ she said.

‘We are hoping to expand our programs and services because there are so many in need and without any government support, we’re reliant on the generosity of the community to fundraise and donate to keep our vital services running.”

Challenge Brain Cancer 2024 is a virtual fitness event where individuals and team can sign up to swim, run or bike ride throughout the month of May to fundraise for Peace of Mind Foundation.

Rebecca is encouraging people to get behind the event, with ever dollar going a long way to helping families like Ryker’s take on this insidious disease.
