Meet Tera, Nas Client Support Specialist

Tera joined Peace of Mind Foundation’s National Advocacy Service (NAS) last year after spending six years travelling on board the family yacht with her husband and two children, sailing around Australia and Indonesia. Tera’s sea change came after supporting close family through cancer and a serious injury with her compassionate and caring nature now helping patients and their families through the challenge of brain cancer.

What do you love most about your job?

I’ve seen firsthand how overwhelming it is when facing a serious health diagnosis and just how important it is to have support. To be able to do this work as my regular job is a privilege – whether it’s simply someone to talk through what’s worrying you, help with research on resources, or guide them on what’s available, it’s incredibly rewarding.

Are there some positive outcomes you can share?

It’s the simple things, step by step, day by day, walking alongside our patients and loved ones. My best moments are after speaking to someone who at the start of the call is feeling very sad and low and then after some gentle conversation, whether that’s 20 minutes or an hour, leaving the call feeling a little lighter and supported. That makes my day.

What does a good day off look like to you?

Very simple things like spending time with my family and friends. I’m lucky to live on the Gold Coast and I love the outdoors, so a beach walk and swim with the kids is always a great day.
