Meet Rachael: NAS Client Support Specialist

Rachael’s lived experience and kind and compassionate nature bring highly valued expertise and care in her role as a Client Support Specialist with Peace of Mind Foundation’s National Advocacy Service.

How did you become involved with Peace of Mind Foundation?

I lost my husband Phil to brain cancer (GBM) in May 2021. During the time caring for Phil, I joined a Facebook support group for brain tumour carers. I was fortunate to make many lasting online friendships, one of which became invaluable to me, Peace of Mind Foundation’s National Advocacy Service (NAS) Manager, Fiona Hassmann.

When I lost Phil, I knew I didn’t want his loss to be in vain, so I threw myself into fundraising to find a cure. Fast forward to July 2023, when a position came up with NAS. I hadn’t been ready previously, but somehow my heart yelled YES, give it a shot Rache, its time, and have never looked back.

What do you love most about your job?

I love, love LOVE my job! Our clients, who, let’s face it, leave the hospital with no insight as to what to expect and very little support. Their whole world has turned upside down… queue, Peace of Mind Foundation! From the moment a client hits our database, they are embraced and supported by our incredible team. I believe through my own lived experience, I can make real connections with my clients, I truly know from the bottom of my heart how grateful they are to be heard, and to have a voice. My cup is full every single day just knowing that I am making a little difference in their lives. To be of service.

What does a good day off look like to you?

A good day off is taking off with my two dogs, Buck and Lux in the caravan! Preferably bush camping, lots of trail walks, rivers to swim, and ending the day with a beautiful sunset, the good old “Bush Telly” and a cheeky wine!
