BTAA Head to the Hill 2026

BTAA Head to the Hill | A call for action 💜

Thank you to everyone who attended BTAA’s Head to the Hill at Parliament House in Canberra today, advocating for people and families affected by brain tumours.

Peace of Mind Foundation was proud to have Fiona Hassmann, who leads our National Advocacy Service (NAS), as one of the guest speakers.

Fiona spoke about how some of the greatest challenges often begin after someone leaves the hospital. Suddenly, everything becomes uncertain. Navigating complex systems, Centrelink, the NDIS and other supports can be overwhelming, particularly when a diagnosis affects a person’s ability to work, drive, communicate or manage daily life. As their capacity declines, the burden often shifts to family and carers.

This is why the National Advocacy Service exists.

Since 2021, NAS has supported more than 3,300 people diagnosed with brain cancer and responded to over 11,700 requests for support. We help people understand and navigate complex systems, access essential services and submit the right documentation to get the support they need.

Yet, despite the demonstrated impact, NAS relies on charitable funding. Requests for support are increasing by 30% year on year, while without additional funding, our workforce faces a potential 30% reduction.

We have proposed a co-funding partnership between Government and philanthropy, seeking $720,000 over three years. However, Government funding has not yet been secured.

People affected by brain cancer deserve more than a diagnosis and a list of services to navigate alone. They deserve practical help, specialist guidance and support when they need it most.

Thank you, Fiona, for sharing this important message, and to BTAA and all the guest speakers for your advocacy and for raising awareness.

The need is real. The expertise exists. The impact is proven. Now, we need investment to ensure this support can continue.
